"Organic" is one of the most common words on hoodie labels, and one of the least explained. If you are trying to buy better, it helps to know what it means, what it does not mean, and how to check. This guide covers the basics in plain English.
What is organic cotton?
Organic cotton is cotton grown under organic farming standards, which generally restrict synthetic pesticides and fertilisers and prohibit genetically modified seed. Like any agricultural product, it has to be grown, picked, spun and woven, so "organic" refers to how the fibre is farmed rather than meaning the garment has no environmental impact.
How organic claims are checked
Independent standards exist to verify organic textile claims through the supply chain. The best known is the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS), which certifies textiles made with organic fibres (GOTS). If a brand says a product is certified, it should be able to tell you by which standard.
We describe our hoodies by their fibre composition as listed on each product page.
Organic cotton vs conventional cotton
Both are cotton. Both feel soft, breathe well and take prints nicely. The difference is in how the cotton is farmed. Conventional cotton is grown without the organic restrictions on synthetic inputs and seed.
From a wearer's point of view, the day-to-day experience is similar. The choice is mainly about how the raw material is produced.
What about blends?
Most hoodies are not 100% of any one fibre. Blends exist for good reasons: polyester adds durability, shape retention and quicker drying, while elastane adds stretch to ribbing so cuffs and hems spring back.
Recycled polyester
Recycled polyester is made from existing polyester material rather than new. It is still polyester, and it still sheds fibres when washed, like other synthetics, so gentle, cool washing helps.
What Vazzari's organic hoodies are made of
The organic hoodies in our Nouveau Noir 2075 and Blanc Éclat Society collections, such as the Deadly Behaviour Hoodie, are:
- Body: 85% organic cotton, 15% recycled polyester
- Ribbing: 97% organic cotton, 3% elastane
- Inside: brushed fleece
- Hood: double-layered
- Drawcords: flat, with metal eyelets
They have a comfortable unisex fit, run from XS to 5XL and are £125 at the time of writing.
Our Classic Cotton hoodies in the Experimental Collection use a different fabric: a 100% cotton face on a 65% ring-spun cotton, 35% polyester fabric. We do not describe those as organic.
Fabric is only part of the story
What a garment is made of matters, but so does how many are made. A lot of clothing waste comes from overproduction: things made that never sell. The European Commission estimates 4 to 9% of unsold textiles in Europe are destroyed before being worn (European Commission).
Every Vazzari piece is made to order. Nothing is made until it is ordered, so there are no unsold piles and less waste. You can read how it works on our made-to-order page.
How to make any hoodie more sustainable
The most sustainable hoodie is the one you wear for years. A few habits help:
- Wash less often. Air your hoodie between wears.
- Wash cooler. 30°C or below. WRAP found that washing less often and at lower temperatures, with fuller loads and less tumble drying, could cut laundry's footprint by around 7% (WRAP).
- Air dry. Skip the dryer where you can.
- Repair. Re-thread a drawcord, fix a seam.
- Pass it on. When you are done with it, donate or resell it rather than binning it.
How to read a hoodie label
- Find the composition. It should list each fibre with a percentage.
- Check the ribbing. Often listed separately.
- Look for certification claims. If a product says it is certified, check which standard.
- Check the care instructions. Gentle care makes it last.
Questions to ask any brand
If you are trying to buy better, a few questions help cut through the marketing:
- What exactly is it made of? Look for percentages.
- Is any claim certified, and by which standard?
- How many do you make? Brands that make to order, or in small runs, produce less that goes unsold.
- What is the returns policy? A good returns policy means you are less likely to keep something that does not fit and never wear it.
- How should I care for it? Clear care instructions help a piece last.
Our answers: the composition is listed on every product page, every piece is made to order, and returns are free within 30 days.
FAQ
Is organic cotton better than regular cotton?
It is farmed under organic standards that restrict synthetic inputs and GM seed. It feels similar to wear; the difference is mainly in how the fibre is produced.
Is an organic cotton hoodie 100% organic?
Not always. Many are blends. Ours are 85% organic cotton and 15% recycled polyester, with organic cotton and elastane ribbing.
Why add polyester to an organic hoodie?
Polyester adds durability, helps the hoodie hold its shape and dries faster.
Are organic hoodies softer?
Softness depends more on the yarn, the knit and the brushed finish than on organic farming. Ours have a brushed fleece inside.
How should I wash an organic cotton hoodie?
Inside out, cold (max 30°C), on a gentle cycle with similar colours, no bleach, and dry low or hang to dry.
